Canada Carrot Varieties Have Good Yields
Carrot story
The homeland of the variety is Holland. Belongs to hybrids, the Chantane and Flacca cultivars are considered “parents”. From the second "Canada" received a large root crop and excellent keeping quality, and from the first - a high content of sugar and minerals. Officially, this carrot was entered in the state register in 2001.
Grade description
"Canada" - a hybrid variety of medium-late ripening, has good yield and excellent taste. Designed for cultivation on heavy clay lands.
Roots
Carrots are of standard shape, in the form of an elongated cylinder, the tips are slightly rounded, the root diameter is 5 cm, and length 20 cm. The mass is large, on average 0.1-0.2 kg, there are also 0.5 kg specimens. The flesh is rich orange, the middle is almost the same shade, but slightly darker.
The peel is orange, without tubercles, smooth to the touch. The leaves of the plant are dark green, assembled in a semi-spreading strong rosette.
Seeds
Seeds are small, not very good germination. Fraction 1.7–2.0 mm. It is not difficult to purchase them - they are in every city in our country. It will not be possible to collect seed independently, as Canada carrots are a hybrid variety. Seeds from hybrid varieties do not retain the genetic properties of “parents”, and Canada carrots are no exception.
Advantages and disadvantages
Variety "Canada", like other cultures, has pros and cons, they must be considered when choosing this plant.
The advantages of this variety:
- undemanding to leaving;
- has no particular preferences in the choice of soil;
- excellent taste of root vegetables;
- good keeping quality under proper storage conditions;
- high productivity;
- industrial volumes of culture can be removed by machine;
- high content of vitamins and minerals in root crops;
- resistance to many typical carrot diseases;
- the presence in root crops of a large amount of beta-carotene.
The disadvantages of this variety:
- negatively relates to waterlogging of the soil;
- sprouting for a long time;
- affected by a carrot fly;
- seeds for sowing must be purchased annually, since Canada is a hybrid species.
Ripening period
The variety belongs to the medium-late group. The term of full ripening of root crops is 3 months. This carrot grows extremely fast. "Canada", even during late sowing, can overtake early varieties by germination. Root crops of Canada carrots ripen almost simultaneously.
Productivity
High yields are famous for such varieties as Artek, Nanstkaya and others, but Canada is not inferior to its most productive brethren. With 1 sq. m you can collect from 5 to 8 kg of root crops. The result depends on caring for her, the right choice of landing place and other factors.
Landing Features
The seed material of carrots sprouts for a very long time, respectively, seeds need to be sown as early as possible. Do not make crops too thick, the best planting frequency is about 100 seeds per 1 sq. m
Lighting and soil requirements
Carrots of this variety are neutral in lighting, so if it is not enough, the variety can easily survive it. The plant grows on various soils, but it is better to plant this carrot on slightly acidic sandy or light loamy lands.
The variety brings good results on dense chernozems, cultivation on clay soils, where other varieties of culture do not grow at all, is also acceptable.
You can not land the "Canada" in the freshly watered soil.
Optimal timing
As mentioned earlier, sowing should be done as early as possible. It is better to do this in the last week of April or early May, but not later. Sowing in the winter, spend in mid-October - early November, the temperature by this time should drop to +5 degrees.
Site selection and soil preparation
Hybrid "Canada" withstands a lack of light, so you can plant a variety anywhere on the site, even in the darkest one. As for the preparation of the soil, it all depends on the choice of soil in which you plan to plant carrots. The best option is light soils; carrots bring the greatest yield on them. Dig the soil in advance, especially if it is heavy, and feed it with mineral fertilizers.
Crop rotation rules
During the cultivation of any crop, crop rotation plays an important role. It is better to plant carrots after cabbage, tomato, potatoes, lettuce or onions. Do not sow this variety after cilantro, celery, parsley or caraway seeds.
Sowing technology
Sowing carrots is not very difficult, but there are certain requirements that must be observed during sowing. Seed germination is not very high, but if you place them in the ground without preliminary preparation, then this period will drag on for another 1-2 weeks. Dry grains should not be planted, since they contain a huge amount of useful oils that do not allow water entering during irrigation to get to the germ.
Before planting directly, seed must be thoroughly rinsed and then soaked. As a means for soaking, use 1 liter of warm water and a little stimulating solution, for example, Effekton. It can be replaced with sodium humanate or 1 tbsp. l wood ash.
In this product, place the seed placed in a fabric bag. After a day, remove and rinse with water, wrap in gauze and for 3 days send in the refrigerator to strengthen immunity.
Before sowing, remove the bag and dry the seeds so that they become loose.
Algorithm for sowing carrot seeds:
- Moisten the soil, with a chopper, make small indentations in it.
- Place the seed in the pits to a depth of 15-20 mm.
- Sowing pattern: seeds - 50 cm from each other, furrows - 20-30 cm.
- After sowing, carefully mulch the beds with peat.
- Before the formation of the first shoots, cover the beds with covering material. Ideal agrofiber.
Growing and caring for carrots
Despite the unique ability of Canada carrots to adapt to any growing conditions, the plant still needs high-quality and regular care. It consists of watering and loosening the soil, thinning out the stands and applying fertilizing.
Watering
Carrots "Canada" is considered a resistant variety, so it reacts calmly to the difference in water volumes. But do not overdo it with watering, otherwise the root crops will begin to rot and there will be no harvest. In addition, the frequent application of moisture adversely affects the density of the soil, so water the seedlings as needed.
Thinning
Thinning is a very time-consuming process, so not every summer resident loves to do it. Without thinning, carrots will grow small and not as juicy as they should be. Shoots appear after 14-20 days after planting, it is during this period that thinning should be addressed. Between the rows, weed out and loosen the soil, it should become airy and light. Such an event will help carrots grow better and bring as much yield as possible.
Fertilizer application
Never add organic fertilizing between the rows of carrots, they will completely burn the sprouts. Stop your choice on mineral fertilizers. Use wood ash, ammonium nitrate or superphosphate in granules.
About feeding carrots, see the next article.
Pest and Disease Control
The variety "Canada" is resistant to many typical diseases of the culture, carrots are not afraid of altenariosis, cercosporosis and leaf bloom. The variety is not able to fully combat the carrot fly. The bear can also bring harm - a large digging insect, which is especially dangerous for young root crops.
If pests or diseases are found, the stands must be treated with special chemicals or folk remedies. Processing carrots is carried out no later than 1 month before harvesting, otherwise the root crops are saturated with poisons and will become unfit for food.
Preventive measures:
- Sprinkle wood aisle.
- Use products based on laundry soap or hot pepper infused with water.
- Use infusions of wormwood as a fight against midges and carrots.
Carrot fly reacts very actively to the onion aroma. In order to prevent the appearance of the bear, in the aisles, dig in the crushed eggshell, you can also make scales from fish and other organic residues.
Harvesting
Harvesting is possible only on a sunny day, otherwise the root crops will be poorly stored. First, in the middle of summer, during repeated thinning, remove single mature specimens. Later, at the end of summer or at the beginning of autumn, fully harvest.
Canada Winter Carrot Storage
To keep the carrot harvest as long as possible, you must adhere to the basic rules:
- Choose a place for storage dark and cold, with a temperature indicator of 0 ... + 3 degrees.
- Humidity should be no more than 94%.
- Do not wash root vegetables before storage.
- Do not take broken or unhealthy fruits for storage.
- In the container, place no more than 5-6 root crops, cover them with sand.
- It can also be stacked in piles, and also sprinkled with sand.
With proper storage, in the cellar, carrots are able to maintain commercial qualities for about 10 months. Read about the different ways to store carrots in this article.
Reviews
Oleg, 45 years old, summer resident, Moscow Region. Perfectly grown carrots of the variety "Canada" on heavy soil. We plant it the next year after tomatoes. Since they need good watering, the soil after them is too “clogged”, and not all crops get along in such conditions. But Canada carrots are an exception. Productivity is always at the highest level, taste is excellent.
Peter, 53 years old, gardener, Slavyansk. Root crops grow even, bright orange in color. Very tasty and juicy. In the winter I store in the cellar, the last time the crop lay for about 9 months. The only thing I don’t like about the cultivation of the Canada variety is obligatory thinning. But what can you do, any kind of carrot needs free space.
